Meet my new best friend:

Ashlynn
We both love flowers
We are both huge Tangled fans
And we both have Type 1 diabetes

Ashlyn is the sweetest little girl I've ever met!
She was just diagnosed at the beginning of April. And I truly believe that we were meant to meet each other.
We are dia-buddies and we make living with diabetes a little bit easier for one another.

We practice testing our blood sugar together,
We both like smarties for treating lows,
We have twin blood tester cases,
And Ashlynn even made me this awesome "Magic Circle Chart" just like hers for shots and finger pricks!

Diabetes can be such a hard thing to deal with daily and it's easy to get discouraged, but knowing that I now have Ashlynn watching me makes me want to be the best that I can!

"It's okay, I like diabetes now cause Aliza has diabetes and she is so pretty"
"I have SO many friends with diabetes! Aliza!"
 - Ashlynn

This little girl is truly an angel to me!!

Lovely Letters

Dear College,
You are killing me!

Dear Sister,
I miss you!

Dear Spider,
Thanks for the gnarly bite on my shin! {NOT!!}

Dear Diabetes,
It's your month! So I'll try to be better for you.

Dear CS 1400,
Why did I think I would understand you?

Dear Joy Williams,
Your song 'One of those Days', speak to me more days then not.

Dear Coke Zero Vanilla,
Thanks for keeping me awake. You are maybe too good at it.

Dear Anywhere But Here,
You are tempting me so badly right now.

Dear Fingernails,
I'm sorry that I've chewed you down nubbins. Blame college.

Dear Self,
Hang in there. This to shall pass.

Dear Diabetes Police-

I know that you think you are all knowing..... BUT..... I'm sorry to tell you that you are just annoying! Seriously folks!
  • First of all there are two kinds of diabetes that are very much different! And most likely things you've heard about diabetes is for type 2, which is more common.
  • There's no way to prevent type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes does not come from unhealthy habits or too much sugar when I was young. It is an autoimmune disease.
  • A diet, herbal tea, or medicine man in Africa will not cure me! There is NO cure!
  • I am capable of living a long and healthy life! I plan on outliving millions of non-diabetics!
  • I am not a "danger to society" because of my illness! Any person regardless if they are diabetic or not can be a danger if they do not take care of themselves.
  • I can and will eat anything I want to! It's not 'bad' for me to have sugar. I just need to give myself insulin according to what I eat.
  • I can do anything I want to! Diabetes does not limit me! Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia may make somethings harder but it does not make it impossible!
Unsolicited advice and outrageous 'diabetic knowledge' is not what I want or need! Diabetes is hard enough without your 'help'. Thanks but no thanks!

Sincerely,
Type 1 Diabetic
Aliza Randall

"Sorry your pump took a dump!"
                     Yeah.... me too Dad!

So I'm back to the joys of using syringes. At least for a day. My new pump should be here before noon tomorrow. Now only if I knew my settings or had written them down somewhere... But nope! That would be much to convenient!

Boston and the Betes

So I just returned from a trip to my favorite city....Boston! It was just me and my diabestie Angela! We had a blast!! (well I guess I can't speak for her... but I know I had a blast!)
We were able to do so many fun things that it felt like we were there for a month! Freedom trail, Boston Commons, Little Italy, Mike's Pastry Shop, Harvard, Red Sox game, Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, Watching the street performers ("Do it black guys"), Riding the T, Harbor cruise, and just enjoying every moment! We had a great hotel in a perfect location!
**I'd like to give a shout-out to Hotwire for finding us such a fabulous location! I couldn't have picked a better place!**

Well the reason me and Ang took this little excursion to the east coast was actually for Dtreat: The retreat for young adults with diabetes. My dear mother found info about this who knows where on the internet early one morning and was super excited to share this with me cause it was being held in Boston...only the best city ever!! Dtreat was Friday through Sunday and held at Northeastern University. We got to meet many other young adults with Type 1 diabetes and enjoy fun activities and classes. I think the best thing about this experience for me was just the feeling of belonging it provided me. It's not normal for me to hear beeps of insulin pumps and blood glucose monitors that aren't my own. All these people understand what I am going through! They know and share my same frustrations and discouragements, but we also share the same sense of joy and pride when we are having a good "diabetic day". It is always great to have new diabuddies!!
